Carmel Valley is new construction by San Diego standards. The 1990s tracts around Sage Canyon and Ashley Falls, the newer streets of Carmel Country Highlands, and the newest blocks of Pacific Highlands Ranch were built with walk-in closets, home offices and three-car garages, and a surprising number of those closets hold a safe. Here is the odd part of working this neighborhood. An old mechanical dial has almost nothing to wear out. An electronic lock has a keypad membrane, battery contacts, wiring, and a solenoid or motor, and any one of them can quit. Dead keypads and corroded battery terminals are routine. Failed solenoids are not far behind.
Two things make it worse here. First, many of these safes were builder-grade or big-box units picked up quickly during a move-in, so the lock is the cheapest part of the package. Second, a document safe might sit untouched for a year until someone needs a passport the night before a flight, and that is exactly when a drained battery or a half-forgotten code surfaces.
